Difficult Access Glass Replacements – Loughborough

Difficult access glass replacements to high rise residential block, The Mill, in Loughborough.

The Mill in Loughborough is a premium, extremely unique, residential development. It is a restoration of a Victorian hosiery mill creating 76 1 and 2 bed apartments. The Comprehensive Group were contacted as the site had been experiencing cracked and damaged glazing units to some of the floor to ceiling windows. There were also some other glazed units which required replacement.

The Comprehensive Group were instructed by our client to complete several glazing repairs / replacement unit works across the Loughborough site. Due to the site’s limiting open space, conventional access methods were not feasible. This was the case not only for accessing the defective glazing but also manoeuvring the damaged units out of the aperture and the new units into place.

After initial site survey, our Project Management team discussed the scope of works and best access methods to complete the works. It was agreed that the site team would predominantly use rope access to reach the glazing face and a specialist winch / pulley system to transport the glazed units from ground level to their required installation location.

Opting to use the winch / pulley system for glass transport really makes use of the limited space where normally cranes and MEWPs would be utilised. Furthermore, the winch / pulley system offers excellent flexibility when completing several glass changes in one shift. The system can be moved along a buildings face, working the way along to each works area.

The difficult access glass replacements were conducted using our in-house, IRATA trained, glazing technicians, ground staff and operatives located at roof level to ensure the winch would be fully optimised.

During the works our photographer captured the entire operation and put together the below video to really showcase the project requirements and highlights the difficult access nature of the site and the winch / pulley system being used.

We also captured some still photos from the day showing the various glass breakages that required replacement as well as stills of the difficult access glass replacements being undertaken.
