The Comprehensive Group were called to the RSPB Centre in Newport, Wales, following reports of water ingress and condensation issues throughout the centre’s glazed atrium. The atrium, a central architectural feature of the building, provides natural light and an open, welcoming space for visitors. However, over time, several of the glazing units had failed, resulting in misted panes and visible leaks during periods of heavy rain and now required a glazed atrium refurbishment.
Maintaining a watertight and visually clear atrium was essential not only for the comfort and safety of visitors but also for the protection of the building’s interior finishes and exhibits. The client required a quick, safe, and cost-effective solution that would minimise disruption to daily operations and ensure long-term performance.
Following an initial site survey and assessment, our team identified multiple failed double-glazed units and deteriorated sealant lines contributing to the water ingress. Due to the complex access requirements of the atrium structure, a combination of rope access techniques and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) was proposed to safely reach all affected areas.
Our rope access specialists carried out detailed inspections of the glass-to-frame interfaces, noting areas where previous sealant had failed or degraded. Working in coordination with our ground team, the defective units were carefully removed and replaced with new, energy-efficient double-glazed units designed to match the existing specifications and aesthetics.
In total, 12 glass units were replaced, and the entire atrium was thoroughly resealed using a high-performance silicone system suitable for external glazing applications. This ensured a robust, watertight seal capable of withstanding future environmental exposure.
Working within a public visitor centre presented additional safety and environmental challenges. The RSPB Centre remained operational throughout the duration of the project, meaning careful planning was required to coordinate works around visitor hours and sensitive wildlife exhibits.
Our team implemented a strict Health and Safety Management Plan, including exclusion zones below active work areas and clear communication with site management to ensure minimal disruption. All materials and waste were handled in accordance with environmental best practices, aligning with the RSPB’s sustainability commitments.
Upon completion, the atrium was fully watertight and visually restored, with no further signs of leakage or misting. The replacement glazing has significantly improved the thermal efficiency and appearance of the space, restoring the light-filled environment that defines the centre’s visitor experience.
